Designing an experience that produces knowledge

Add To Calendar

About

Experiences are often judged by whether people enjoyed them, remembered them, or would return.

But what if an experience is also designed to produce knowledge?

This working session looks at how a question can become an experience that gives you something meaningful to observe, test, and learn from.

We’ll use a simple structure:

Question → Hypothesis → Intervention → Observation → Learning

I’ll walk through how I’m applying this thinking within Ode, then we’ll use the framework together.

What we’ll explore

  • Beginning with a question rather than an activity

  • Turning an assumption into a testable hypothesis

  • Designing interventions that connect to the question

  • Deciding what is actually worth observing

  • Separating what happened from what you think it means

  • Turning what you learn into the next iteration

Working portion

Bring one experience you know well.

It could be a restaurant, hotel stay, exhibition, gathering, product interaction, digital experience, or something you’ve designed yourself.

You’ll map it through the framework and identify one change that could make the experience more useful as a source of insight.
