About
Experiences are designed with intentions.
A restaurant may want to feel intimate. A hotel may want to feel effortless. An exhibition may want to create curiosity. A digital experience may want to feel intuitive.
But people do not always perceive an experience the way it was intended.
The Perception Audit is a practical working session about examining that gap.
We’ll look at how different elements of an experience shape interpretation, where mixed or unintended signals can appear, and how closer observation can reveal what an experience is actually communicating.
I’ll share how I think about this within Ode, then we’ll apply the thinking together.
What we’ll explore
The relationship between design intention and human perception
How small details can change the meaning of an experience
Why different people can interpret the same experience differently
Where conflicting or unintended signals can appear
What closer observation can reveal about an experience
How perception can inform future design decisions
Working portion
Bring one experience you know well.
It could be a restaurant, hotel stay, exhibition, gathering, retail environment, product interaction, digital experience, or something you’ve designed yourself.
During the session, you’ll examine that experience through the lens of perception and leave with a clearer understanding of one area worth reconsidering.
