Designing for failure

Add to Calendar

About

Experiences rarely unfold exactly as planned.

A guest arrives late. A room fills faster than expected. A handoff gets missed. Information does not reach someone in time. Access changes. A partner runs behind. A small operational issue becomes part of the experience.

Designing for Failure is a studio session about anticipating those moments before they become guest problems.

We’ll look at how failure states can be treated as part of the design itself, and how stronger experiences account for uncertainty, friction, and breakdown from the beginning.

What we’ll explore

  • Where experiences are most vulnerable to failure

  • How delays, capacity, access, and missing information affect perception

  • Why operational problems quickly become experience problems

  • How to identify failure states before launch

  • How to design more resilient guest journeys

Studio discussion

I’ll walk through a few common failure scenarios and how I think about them within Ode.

We’ll look at what can be anticipated, what cannot, and how to design responses that protect the experience when something changes.
