An Invitation to Raison d'Être
For some time, Ode has been interested in a simple question:
Why do we experience the same thing so differently?
Why does one person move closer while another pulls away? Why do certain tastes, spaces, sounds, materials, or ideas capture our attention immediately while others do not?
On November 14, 2026, we will explore those questions in person.
Raison d’Être is the inaugural Ode Experience: an invitation-only group will move through New York City, encountering experiences across taste, scent, touch, sight, sound, space, time, and system before coming together for a multisensory dinner.
Why Raison d’Être?
Raison d’être (pronounced ray-zon DET-ruh) is a French phrase that translates to “reason for being.”
We often know what we like, dislike, seek out, or avoid without knowing what gave those preferences their reason for being.
Across eight senses, we will examine the experiences, contexts, associations, and assumptions that shape perception, and what happens when they are disrupted.
Because perhaps the more interesting question is not simply:
What do you like?
It is:
Why?
Throughout the day, we will pay closer attention to what draws us in, what we resist, what changes with context, and what surprises us.
The experience concludes with Decoded, a live visualization of how the room perceived the day.
No expertise in perception is required.
The November cohort will bring together people across art, food, design, culture, technology, science, and other disciplines, alongside those who are simply curious to experience something unfamiliar.
What matters is a willingness to participate, question a first reaction, and notice what changes.

Because Raison d’Être is intentionally small, attendance begins with an Expression of Interest.
All prospective guests — including current Ode subscribers — should submit the form to be considered for the November cohort.
Expressions of Interest will be reviewed as we thoughtfully curate the room. Submitting the form does not guarantee an invitation. Selected guests will receive a private invitation to RSVP and confirm their seat.
You do not need to already subscribe to Ode to express interest. If you are new to Ode, submitting the form will also enroll you as a free subscriber to Ode Editorial so you can receive future Raison d’Être correspondence.
